lol, well I guess I should put up a note here as several people have asked why I haven’t told anynoe it’s my birthday.

Well hey, if you know you know.  If you don’t you don’t.  That’s always been my approach to it.

For those of you asking if I feel old, nope.  I’m still 21 at heart.

For those in the area, if you have my number, feel free to give me a call and join in the festivites tonight!

Dallas City Council Passes Smoking Ban

Posted in Politics, Rants, Taz with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on December 10, 2008 by tazspaz

Yes you heard right, Dallas city council passed a new ordinance!  On April 10th smokers, you are banned from the establishments you chose to go to in which you enjoy a smoke.

Why is it that we can infringe on others rights?  Even when I was a non-smoker, yes I smoke now, I didn’t get it.

So if you smoke, you are in a bar/pool hall/entertainment venue, and I don’t like it would I go to that establishment?  Nope.  Would you?

Let’s try and put this in a different light; forget the smoking part.  I have stores, restaurants, venues, etc. that I chose not to go to.  Yup, imagine that, places that do a type of business or provide services or just DO something I don’t like.  I chose not to go there and spend my hard earned money.  Do you go to places that you don’t like the atmosphere, that you don’t agree with their type of business, that you just don’t like something about it?  Please, if you answered yes you are an idiot – stop reading now.

Come April 10th your Dallas City Council elected officials (let’s exclude “council members Vonciel Jones Hill, Steve Salazar, Tennell Atkins, Sheffie Kadane and Mitchell Rasansky opposed the measure”1) have decided, citing health reasons, that they need to ban smoking.  Taking it in their own hands to lose revenue from their businesses not only for the city in overall budgetary revenue garnered from those businesses but in effect several businesses will be adversely affected and will close.  Businesses that chose the Dallas venue based on type of clientele.  Now that clientele will be forced elsewhere.  Go ahead, raise the “Sin Tax”.  You know, that tax you won’t be seeing much revenue from because they won’t be needing that in your area any longer.  Proven fact, the bar industry in Dallas will drastically decline.  “Sin Tax” sales will decline.  Where do you think that “ecosystem” is made up?  Property owners watch your taxes in the coming years.  It may take a full year or two but the impact will be felt.  Where else do you get revenue for the city from?  Sales tax, property tax?

If a city such as Plano can negatively feel the impact of a single bar with large revenue being shuttered how much more do you think the city of Dallas will feel multiple bar closings, venues closing, lower sales in tobacco products, etc?  If Martini Park’s closing in Plano has that big an effect as to change a “dry county” policy for the city… I’m just saying.

Guess the next question is, will Dallas residents remember this when the time comes for elections next round?

This message is brought to you for your health and well being; if you are worried about your health and well being please do not frequent establishments where people are smoking.  We promise not to come to your health shake establishment and order a soy, extra protein, extra creatine and light up a smoke beside you at the military press.  Do us a favor and stop infringing on our rights.

Pure Political Rant Here

Posted in Politics, Rants, Taz with tags , , , , , , , , , , on April 29, 2008 by tazspaz

Okay, I must preface this time with I’m an Independent (albeit in Republican clothing for a long time now) and am not a Democrat.  I was disillusioned by Democrats back in the ’90’s.  Currently I have voted in my state’s primary for Senator McCain.

Okay, to the matter at hand.  Drop it all ready!  Sheesh, just as I didn’t want to listen to the Clinton/Lewinsky debacle ad nauseam I don’t need to hear about Obama/Rev. Wright!

Heck seriously, if Hillary keeps swinging them this low and using Rev. Wright to do her dirty work I say we bring Lewinsky back up and drag her decision(s) during that time into the picture.  Let’s ask why the Clinton’s turned to Rev. Wright in their time of need during the scandal of Lewinsky and how Hillary has so easily distanced herself now by saying “he would not have been my pastor”.  These allegations surrounding Rev. Wright are not new.

Do some research folks:
The Political Inquirer

So, I admire Senator Obama’s desire to pull punches instead of deliver them.  That time has however passed us by.  Now I say, if she want’s to fight dirty it’s time to play dirty.  No need to do mud slinging, it is time to pull out her own words:

She lied about running from gunfire, not once, not twice but on four separate distinct occasions.  Meaning she wasn’t “very tired” at all four of those enunciations.  She has over stated her resume and in fact Senator Obama has more years in elected office than Senator Clinton to date.

She has changed her position on the war, was pro-NAFTA (but ahem isn’t now), her health plan didn’t make it off the proverbial steps the first time, and it won’t grow legs and go anywhere because it is STILL too radical to make it through congress.  However she has clearly stated her plan is “The Plan” to go by and would reintroduce it if she became President.   She has been skipping out on bills, you know because you want to help the working class and small businesses by skipping out on your owed debt.

So when someone, continually lies, changes position on key items, and doesn’t know when to quit/change (personal lapses in judgment aside ahem) let me ask you, is that the type of person you really want to give the “football” to and have them lead the team?  Oh wait, I live in Texas where we bring back players to destroy our teams chances and run correctional facilities for other teams!!  Seriously though, is that the person you really want running the country?

By the way …

Microsoft Bid for Yahoo – Deadline Passes

Posted in Rants, Taz with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 28, 2008 by tazspaz

So as many of you are aware, those that pay attention to the markets anyhow, the deadline for the buy-out offer from Microsoft has passed.  Yahoo! is still standing firm saying they are worth at least $40 a share.

Now here is my Rant!

Is Yahoo! in the know on something the rest of the market AND regular day people like you and I have no clue about?  Is Microsoft really undercutting and driving down Yahoo!’s value?  To answer these questions I guess we would want to see how Yahoo!’s stock has performed for the past 3 years right?  Okay lets do that:

(Okay I’m bad, using Microsoft Money to track market changes for Yahoo! here)

Okay so we see on the chart that the last time they even SAW a $40 price per share ($40.23 actually) was in November 2005.  Perhaps I haven’t looked far enough back right, you know to see the gem of a deal they think they are?  Lets go back 5 years now.  Nope, November 2005 is still the best at $40.23).  Wow, I must really be missing something here.  Let’s think about this for a moment even if I was to look back and try and see where they are coming from going back 10 years I still don’t see where they think that they can make $40 per share or more in the near (say 3 years) future?  Yes before and briefly into 2000 they did well.  As we all remember (and sorry if I make you shudder) the .com bust of our age revalued Yahoo!  Since  June of 2006 Yahoo! has been unable to break and run up to $35 per share.  Seriously the offer from Microsoft was a fair one.

Now they are faced with a hostile take over or a steady decline for some time.  Should have taken the offer, Beavis.

Today’s Rant

Posted in Rants, Taz with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on February 28, 2008 by tazspaz

Today’s rant is brought to you by the letters A, D, F and the number 2.

So ever wonder what it would be like to live in the times of the future?  When robots would be programmed to terminate human life?  A time where it felt like the “Arnold” was breathing down your neck as you tried to run away?  Well everyone that time is NOW.  Tune in for more news updates on this rant here.

In other news today it has been brought to our attention that not ONLY will you be persecuted for your name in high school (please, his name is Lardas what do you think); the persecution will continue well after college and the start of your career.  For more on this “breaking” story see here.

Pardon me I have to go get my personal T1 and reprogram him now.

D is for Dumb and A is for …. well you can figure that out.  F is for fire …. Fire …. FIRE (perhaps I have bent toward fire???) and 2 is for the number of people it takes to bring another crazy like me into the world.  😀

The Broadcast Storm Blues
Somethin’ slowing my network,
Tell me what could it be,
It ain’t my magination’
CIO’s callin’ me
Workin’ quarter past midnight,
Restin’ my head on wood,
Gettin’ no dinner break and
Tryin’ all that I could

You see my director done told me,
that “I got the network slow blues,
If I don’t get to fixin’,
then somebody else fills my shoes

Well here is the latest Rant from Taz!

I celebrated my 34 birthday in odd fashion.  The day started with my neighbor’s and I hanging out and them congratulating me to having to take care of an inebriated younger sibling who caused no end of drama for most of the remainder of the day.  However, the evening of that day salvaged an otherwise (yet once again) horrible birthday.  Due to someone planning a great night with dinner and Cirque Eloize: Rain tickets, 4 of us went out and had a great time.  Many called to have me come out for my birthday and celebrate like we did last year however; I didn’t feel the need to involve TABC in my birthday this year. 😉

My Daughter’s birthday was by far more fun!  I brought her to Build-A-Bear Workshop and watched as she ran through picking everything out.  She already knew exactly what she wanted and where it was at so the stint in the crowd was short lived.  Thankfully!  The longest part was getting the bear stuffed and paying at the counter.  Then she picked to watch Alvin and the Chipmunks and have “dinner” in the theater.  Who knew you could spend over $100 on snacks for 4 people!  SHEESH!

Cirque Eloize: Rain
This was one of the most amazing shows ever.  I hear that it is better in Las Vegas but the encore showing here in Dallas was great!  So many people seem to forget that it is a tale of life and not just a subset of enactments.  If you have yet to see it I would encourage you to go.  Even if it is a long weekend trip, flight to a different city, or a long drive I say it is well worth it!

On the travel front, personally, I have been to many places as you all can see from earlier posts.  The one place I seem to find myself a lot lately has been in L.A.  I do have to say I really enjoy the Hilton Garden Inn Suites in Montebello.  The adjacent golf course is grand and has spectacular views while you play the course.  Might I once again add that you should do your best to stay away from Chuey’s?!?!?

I’m off to L.A. again in the morning!

On the movie front let’s see what have I seen with the kids recently:

Bee movie:
In my opinion is a “B” movie.  It was funny and cute in the beginning and the kids loved it to death.  However, if I wanted to watch Seinfeld again I’d go rent a season series of DVDs.  Half way through the movie it seems to descend into the old format until near the end of the movie once more.

Pleasantly surprised.  I loved English Literature as a kid and even remember having to do an essay on Beowulf (was suppose to be 10 pages I submitted 250) in which you continued the story.  I didn’t know until the movie started that it was suppose to be animated.  I was going to see it because Angelina Jolie was in it.  : )

Alvin and the Chipmunks:
By far one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a really long time.  Reminded me of the days when we would put on 45’s and listen to the Christmas songs (yes I dated myself there but if you were paying attention earlier I already said my age) as they made your ears bleed from the high pitch that had kids giggling uncontrollably.  Same goes for the movie; kids and adults alike were laughing and enjoying.  It was fun to see my kids so happy that day.

This is like all the Disney favorites rolled into one, moved from animated to “real world” and blended all together to make for an interesting family fun filled time!  If you have kids I encourage you to bring them and watch this movie.  You won’t be disappointed!

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium:
How to describe this movie?  It is full of magical wonder, with great actors and a story line that grabs even those of us that are no longer “young” at heart.  It gave me a new respect for Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman!

Well I hope today’s Rant gave you something to laugh about and think of and I wish you a wondrous Christmas this year!
